Social Media Etiquette That Your Mama Should Have Taught You

Okay, we are in full swing of the first quarter of 2020, I believe there are some “business etiquette” things we need to discuss. I almost feel like we are about to have the “know your body” conversation but only in social media terms. It will get a little awkward but I promise that you’ll gain wisdom on how to best use social media.

Social media is an amazing tool for you to use when you have live and virtual events. Entrepreneurs can really benefit from some of the tools that are free on the platforms. Although each platform has it’s own things that work well, etiquette is pretty much the same across the board.

Oh, but we can’t just jump right in and eat without washing our hands and getting rid of some dirty habits. Let me know if you’ve felt the fire when someone did this to you.

Dirty habits on social media include: (I only listed 10 but I am sure there are so many more)

1. Tagging 99 people on your video or post

2. Creating an event page and inviting everyone on your friend’s list

3. Posting a link or a flyer and tagging people in the comments

4. Inboxing people only when you are trying to make your quota

5. Sending someone a link just because they liked your post

6. Sending friend requests to random friends of your friends to gain more friends. (This is strange real life and online. 🤦🏾‍♀️)

7. Going to someone else’s page and posting a link in their comments without permission

8. Liking your own posts (We kind of know that you like the post…cuz you wrote it!)

9. Creating a post that says the algorithms are only allowing certain people to see your post and for people to comment.

10. Only showing up when you have something to sell

I get that we live busy (Not necessarily productive) lives but the way to success is through consistent effort and work! Tagging 99 people will not instantly make you a million or make you become an influencer.

It just annoys people and makes them ignore your posts. (And this is why the algorithm is only showing your content to 20% of your followers)

I know of coaches that have even been promoting some of these habits. I get it. Everyone is looking for a way to cheat the system but instead, you are just cheating yourself.

It’s time to get back to having conversations as a marketing tool. Having real conversations will 1. Give you better engagement online, 2. Create a community where people want to share what you have, and 3. Show friends and followers that you are knowledgeable about the product/service you are selling. This is how you build a relationship with those who follow you, subscribe, connect and support.

It doesn’t take more time than you’re already using unless you are not online. It will take you to be deliberate and consistent.

Below are a few tips that can help:

1. Find five groups that are actively engaged where your target audience is located.

This is a great tool that can be used on a few different platforms. Don’t just share a post into the group. Sharing into groups will get less engagement than posts that are directly in a group. Remember, social media is run by robots that have certain triggers and things it looks out for. There is not someone hand-picking your posts to not get engagement.

Go in and do a post introducing yourself to the community. No need for links. Have a conversation or two. Respond to the comments with gifs, emojis, and sentences. Then go and comment with actual content on a few other posts in the group. Your consistency in doing this allows people to see your name and begin to know who you are.

2. Leave groups where you have not been active for more than 3 months

Often times we have been added to a group because we were friends with someone or that topic really resonated with us at that time. Ask yourself does it still fit in the mix. If it doesn’t than quietly exit stage left. lol This will do a lot of things for your engagement and you will find yourself gaining new followers.

When you remove yourself from the groups you will also see a change in your notifications. We miss some great opportunities and key conversations because there are so many notifications that we just don’t see. It becomes overwhelming. As you niche down on the groups that matter most to you go and make sure that your notifications for each group are set to all. By default, it may only be set to highlights that are posted in the community.

3. Get more active on your business page

People have been sleeping on the power of a business page. The video editing options along with the Instagram integration makes it less work on you. It even allows you to create a store right on your page.

Most people don’t use their business page because they think it’s going to take a lot of work. It takes a little time to learn how to use the bells and whistles but in the long run it is a great investment of time.

Don’t believe me? This month I’m starting a journey on my page to create momentum for the World Voice League. Follow along and see why having a business page is a great idea. http://www.facebook.com/worldvoiceleague
